It is so territorial that when seeing its own reflection in glass ,it fights ''itself''.

What is its diet?
About 90% of Northern Cardinals feed on weeds,seeds,grain,insects,and fruits.
Northern Cardinals feed their young insects.They eat:

• bramble berries
• sumac berries
• cherries
• dogwood berries
• grapes
• mulberries
• blueberries
• elderberries

What is its life cycle?
Usually,it has 2 broods of young a year.They mate in March and again in May to July.The female sometimes lays 5 eggs!The eggs take about 12 days to hatch.
Cardinals build nests in small trees,shrubs,bushes,and in thick vines,about 5 to 8
feet off the ground.They use twigs,moss,bark,grass,and other soft matirials to
build nests.

How do Northern Cardinals behave?
Cardinals are non-migratory birds.Because cardinals are songbirds,the male uses a call to attract a mate.Unlike most songbirds,the female also sings.In the first
sunny days of late winter,you may hear the cardinal's song which sounds like
"cheer,cheer" or a "chink" sound.

What is its habitat?
Cardinals live in and near forests.They build their nests all across North America,
espesially in dense thickets.They may live in parks and yards(near humans)and
eat birdseed from feeders.

How many eggs do Northern Cardinals usually lay?
They usually lay 3-4 eggs per brood.

What are it's adaptations?
It has a large cone-shaped bill to help it crack seeds.It also has
more feathers in winter than in summer because it is very cold.
Cardinals have strong beaks to hep them eat their food,which
consists mainly of nuts,berries,and seeds with hard shells.

What does the Northern Cardinal look like?
It has a long tail,is 7.75'' long,and has a long tail.The adult male is bright red,but a little dull on it's wings.The adult female
has a reddish crest,brownish gray upperparts,and has a dark
red bill and crest.Unlike the others,the babies are dull grey.
